The Humboldt Chronicles - How Much Money?

Whether you know it or not, everyone on the north coast is affected by marijuana.

Weed has played a major role in Humboldt's culture, politics, social structure and economy, and it's emerging from the subculture faster than ever before.

We're excited to launch a long-term series called "The Humboldt Chronicles: Dispatches from Marijuana Country."

It's hosted by SoHum journalist Kym Kemp and airs next on KHUM at 1pm on Saturday, February 4th and Monday, February 6th at 12pm, download with iTunes, or download below.

The first episode explores the macroeconomics of marijuana in Humboldt County. As one business owner told us, we're all in the marijuana business whether we like it or not.

Johnny "Guitar" Watson

Etta James on Johnny "Guitar" Watson: "I got everything from him . . . my whole ballad style comes from imitating Johnny's style.  He was the baddest and the best."

Fri 2/3 was the birthday of the late Johnny "Guitar" Watson, born in Houston in 1935.  A major influence on musicians as diverse as Frank Zappa, fellow Texan Guitar Slim, Jimi Hendrix and Etta James.

Shelter Cove Rescue

Not that anyone doubts the skill and bravery of our local rescue teams, but here's further proof. Over the weekend, some hikers found themselves up a cliff as night fell over the Lost Coast. Read more here

Fri the 27th on The South Side | Elmore James & Bobby "Blue" Bland

Elmore James | Bobby "Blue" BlandCheck out The South Side website for links in tribute to the birthdays of 2 great vocalists who helped define very different styles of blues.

Elmore James never gave up his acoustic guitar when he came to Chicago from the Delta...he put a pickup on it and played an intense style of slide guitar to go along with a vocal attack that's instantly recognizable.

Bobby Bland helped create an urban, big band sound that used Gospel and Rhythm & Blues to create a string of classic Soul/Blues hits in the 60's & 70's. Tune in for generous helpings of each, along with new releases and your requests.

All This Cute Could Be Yours

From our friends at Myrtle Avenue Vet center:

Bugsy is a six year old spayed female terrier mix who weighs about 15 pounds. She is a very loving and well trained little girl, but was diagnosed with diabetes in early December and needs insulin injections twice a day.

Bugsy's owner was unable to provide her with the long term medical care she needs, and she is currently looking for a new family. Bugsy would do best in a home where she is the only dog, but she seems to do well with cats.

She is a mellow girl who loves to cuddle and go for walks. Bugsy has been staying with our family for about 3 weeks and it's time to find her a forever home.

She has been doing very well with her insulin treatment and is ready to start a new life! If you would like to learn more about or meet this wonderful girl please contact Myrtle Avenue Veterinary Hospital at 443-8686 or call Sara at 496-0270.

Storm Activity

DEVELOPING:

Massive Facebook chatter suggests ORE 255 near Brookings is the affected road, but we’re unfamiliar with that turf. Any local intel would be appreciated.

“ORE255, 5 miles North of Intersection with Oregon Coast Highway US101 MP 357; Closure

Flooding is occurring, use an alternate route.

Stay up on Oregon road conditions here.

As for the Southern Humboldt 101 slide site, KHUM callers are reporting smooth sailing despite one northbound lane closed.

CalTrans is currently reporting no delays or closures on 299, 36, or 101.Check their latest reports.

Developing storm stories will be covered in greater detail over at the Lost Coast Outpost.

Members of Bon Swing will played on KHUM Thursday, January 19th at 1pm. This will be rebroadcast on Saturday at 1pm for KHUM encores.
