Honors KHUM for Storm Coverage

The National Association of Broadcasters has named KHUM its Service To America-Friends In Need Award winner for community service during the 2005/2006 winter storms.

This Service to America Award, administered through the National Association of Broadcasting Educational Foundation, recognizes the incredible efforts of local radio and television broadcasters who keep the public informed in times of need, and sponsor events that benefit the public good.

The Friends In Need Award is given to one radio station and one TV station each year. Previous winners of the NABEF Friends in Need Award include KGO in San Francisco, WWZZ in Arlington VA, and WRAR Tappahannock, VA.

Patrick Cleary, KHUM General Manager said, "We are tremendously honored to receive such a prestigeous award from our peers. It is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of our on air staff. Larry Trask, Cliff and Amy Berkowitz, John Matthews and Mike Dronkers did an incredible job of keeping the community informed. "

Cleary will accept the award on KHUM's behalf at this year's NABEF Service to America Award ceremony, being held in Washington D.C., on June 12th, 2006.

KHUM has received the award for its broadcasts over New Years when an unexpected storm knocked power out of most Humboldt County homes and closed all major highways in and out of the area. For four days, KHUM staffers provided information regarding power, road conditions, and general safety information, often broadcasting out of the homes of its on air announcers.
