What is KHUM all about?

KHUM is a live, local, community based radio station. That means we don’t sound like anybody else! Our music format (if that’s the right word) is 'Free-Form' based on the pioneer radio stations of the late 60’s such as KSAN, San Francisco. However, KHUM is not a re-creation of the past, we play music from a great variety of current genres. We have live, local folks on the air and, from time to time we even have live music in studio. Our music is built on a foundation of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues, Folk, and R & B. However it wouldn’t be unusual to also hear tunes from Billie Holiday to Blue Grass.

A bit more about the music...

The music is hand picked by our air personalities so each show is a bit different and reflects the flavor of the individual and his/her mood. The shows are put together in such a way as to weave an ever-changing tapestry of tempo and flavor. We are not bound by the music industry charts or what 'hits' are being pushed. The only yardstick KHUM uses to pick our music is it’s got to be good. We realize that is purely subjective. However, we feel that radio is an art form and that art is best when it is used to express the creativity of the individual artist, in this case the air personality. Hey, these are real people and they really do love this music. It’s hard to think of any great piece of art that was created by a committee. With constantly changing musical tempos and styles, and a lack of songs being repeated, KHUM is designed for listening for long periods of time without becoming fatiguing. Hey, it’s not done yet, but then again, it never will be. KHUM is an ever changing, evolving, work-in-progress.
