University Singers and Humboldt Chorale

"It is jubilant, dramatic, ethereal, and in many ways a prayer for peace," says conductor Rachel Samet about Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Please join the HSU Department of Music, University Singers, Humboldt Chorale, and choral director Rachel Samet for a thrilling evening of choral music called "Rouse the Dawn!" on Friday, May 4 at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. The concert title is borrowed from the opening text of one of the featured works on the program - Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein - which is his most frequently performed and moving choral work. This performance will include the lovely singing of local child soloist Aurora Pitts, as well as the accompaniment of guest organist Rudy de Vos and harpist Kristin Lloyd, both from the Bay Area, and percussionist Ryan Franzen. Chichester Psalms is a three movement work in Hebrew. Bernstein was commissioned to write the work for Chichester Cathedral in England during a sabbatical from his post as music director of the New York Philharmonic. It was the only composition that he completed during his sabbatical and one of his most successful, incorporating elements of classical music, jazz, blues, musical theater, and traditional Jewish music. It is jubilant, dramatic, ethereal, and in many ways a prayer for peace. In addition to Chichester Psalms, the choirs will be performing excerpts from Bernstein's West Side Story and Mass. Additional works include Renaissance madrigals and motets, Romantic composer Rheinberger's "Abendlied," and Jake Runestad's "The Peace of Wild Things" based on the poetry of Wendell Berry. The concert will conclude with both choirs joining with HSU's Opera Workshop to perform Bernstein's moving "Make Our Garden Grow" from Candide. $10 General, $5 Senior/Child, FREE for HSU students with ID.
