Spare Change Auditions

High school freshman, sophomores, and juniors are invited to audition for next year's Spare Change Peer Education and Teen Theatre Troupe! Spare Change ("Spare the time to Change your mind") is an education program of Planned Parenthood Northern California. Teens receive over 40+ hours of professional training, then educate their peers on the realities and responsibilities of sex through writing and performing original skits, classroom teaching, community outreach, and one-on-one contacts. Teen participants earn 200+ community service hours, strong letters of recommendation for colleges and/or employment. They gain professional skills and knowledge that is directly applicable to work in healthcare, counseling, advocacy, theater and teaching. Many also gain a strong sense of purpose and lifelong friends. Every year, around one thousand Humboldt County youth learn about sexual and reproductive health from Spare Change teens. Spare Change members receive training on, and then teach about the following topics: safer sex, STDs, birth control, teen pregnancy and pregnancy options, mental health, suicide prevention, eating disorders, body image, healthy vs. abusive relationships, sexual diversity LGBTQ+, and more.
