Signs of Water & Site Reading
Signs of Water documents the wooden signs around Arcata that are posted at openings into the creeks under the streets, marking the mile and name of the stream. Arcata, like many cities, is built on top of a system of creeks. Some diverted, some culverted, underground or hidden in between blocks of buildings. To encounter a sign is to be suddenly reminded of the extent to which we have altered the environment to create the ground we walk on; aware that there is a world of water under our feet that has been covered, but still flows. Site Reading is an ongoing exploration of landscapes and the natural world, a study of color, texture, and feelings one is immersed in when encountering the edge of wilderness. Signs of Water and Site Reading will be on display at the Sanctuary, 1301 J Street in Arcata, from June 1-July 31, with an opening reception at Arts Arcata Friday June 14 from 6-9 p.m. The exhibition can also be viewed during North Coast Open Studios the first two weekends of June, during Open Lab on Saturdays from 12-6 p.m., and at Arts Arcata July 12. There will be a guided bike tour of the creek signs around Arcata on Saturday June 22, meeting at the Sanctuary Open Lab at noon and heading out at 12:30 p.m. Jacquelyn Nan Stuber is an artist from Albany, California. She received a BFA in photography from California College of the Arts in Oakland. She currently resides in Arcata, California. She primarily shoots color negative film on medium format and 35mm cameras. Her work explores the relationship between human beings and the environment, questioning the perception of nature within a man made world, and examining the intersection between the natural world and built landscapes.
