Redwood Region Audubon Society Annual Banquet and Auction
Join Redwood Region Audubon Society for its Annual Banquet and Silent Auction. Doug Forsell, retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist, will give a fascinating presentation entitled “Howland, Baker, and Jarvis Islands: Our Most Remote National Wildlife Refuges." These refuges, which Doug managed in the 1980’s, lie within 100 miles of the equator in the Central Pacific Ocean, and are separated by over 1100 miles of uninterrupted ocean. Throughout the past 150 years, a couple of million seabirds have managed to nest there despite many man-made hazards such as rats, cats, invasive plants, and contaminants. Doug will cover the islands’ colorful history including guano wars and biological and chemical warfare testing. The island’s terrestrial wildlife and colorful marine life also will be showcased. After receiving a Master's Degree from Humboldt State University, Doug Forsell worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 36 years. He has worked to reduce threats to sea birds from invasive plants and predators, sand mining, oil spills, habitat degradation, entanglement in fishing gear, and wind power development through knowledge gained from shipboard and aerial surveys. The banquet social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Meat and veggie options will be offered by Brett Shuler Fine Catering. Tickets are priced on a sliding scale from $40 to $60.
