HSU Guitar Ensemble

Please join the HSU Department of Music and guitar teacher Nicholas Lambson for an intimate evening of music composed for the classical guitar and played by the students of the HSU guitar studio on Saturday, April 14 at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. $10 General, $5 Senior/Child, FREE for HSU students with ID. "Although our concerts usually have a main musical theme, this time our theme is more about our instruments. One of my long-time talented private guitar students, Helen Winfrey, made an extremely generous donation to the guitar program this year to allow my university students to thrive. So we decided to play some guitar quartets that will greatly benefit from these instruments. Thank you, Helen!" Nicholas Lambson The concert will include a concerto for guitar, two duets, and two quartets. One quartet is a famous piece of music by Maurice Ravel, who was similar to Claude Debussy. It has a few surprises, but in general it is a beautiful piece and the balance and tone of the new instruments elevates it to the next level. Another quartet is a modern piece by a Cuban composer, Leo Brouwer. It is basically a musical depiction of a storm, from a few sprinkles, to a downpour, to gusts of wind, perhaps an eye of a hurricane, and hail! It also greatly relies on balance between the players, which we are able to achieve with the new guitars. Also on the program is the very first guitar concerto ever written. Mauro Giuliani originally wrote this for guitar and orchestra, which was a shocking concept at the time. Guitars were not taken as seriously as other instruments (that may still be true) and they were also much quieter at the time. However, the composer was a total “shredder” (modern guitar-speak for a virtuoso) and he was so famous that he elevated the status of the instrument forever. To round out the program, two short Brazilian guitar duets in the style of bossa nova will be played. They have some funky rhythms, chords, and melodies, and are a fantastic contrast to the rest of the program.
