HSU Graduation Recital

Please join the Humboldt State University Department of Music and their graduating seniors as they present the 2019 Graduation Recital, a brand new event envisioned by a special group of HSU music students for the enjoyment of their families, friends, and the entire north coast community, on Friday afternoon, May 17th at 4:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. Admission to this event is FREE and everyone is welcome to attend! The idea of a graduation recital has been percolating in various circles for many years, but this time around a casual conversation between students in the music building lobby morphed into action. It seems that often times, the families of students who have traveled a great distance to attend HSU have to choose between attending recitals and attending graduation ceremonies, and often choose the latter, thus missing out on many or all of their student's solo and ensemble performances. Senior Alyssa Ortega, a flute and tuba player from distant Lancaster, floated the idea of establishing a recital close to graduation so that families, especially parents, could attend both in one trip. Everyone agreed that this sounded like a great idea. It also quickly became apparent that this would mean the graduates could each have a recording of the concert, to commemorate the event, and to remember their friends with whom they have shared this journey. Ultimately, Tulare native Richard Rios, who will have graduated in four years with three music concentrations, including music education, saxophone performance, and percussion performance, brought the idea to Department of Music chair Cindy Moyer, who was quick to add the recital to the spring semester calendar with the enthusiastic support of the music faculty. It sounds as though Rios speaks both for himself and his fellow graduates. "I've been thinking this last semester that the most us music grads get is a picture outside the music building. How much cooler would it be to have a recorded performance of you and all the people that you graduated with? That is so much more of a meaningful memento to me than a picture!" What better way to usher in the HSU Graduation Weekend than by joining these students as they share their gifts with their various communities. The gloriously eclectic repertoire will include "Romantica," a marimba solo by Emmanuel Sejourne performed by Richard Rios, followed by three songs from composers as diverse as Mozart, Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, and Freddie Perren performed by tenor Samuel L. Brown, pianist Chuang Li performing "Allegro de Concierto, Op. 45" by Enrique Granados, two movements from J.C. Bach's "Concerto in C minor for Viola and Orchestra" played by Michael Hall, trumpet player Collin Kirkwood performing "Sonata No. 6 in G Major" by Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky, trumpet player Ryan Blake performing "Andante et Allegro" by Guy Ropartz, guitarist Connor West and bassist Loren Acosta playing Django Reinhardt's "Swing 42," "Il Bacio" by Luigi Arditi sung by soprano Jacqueline Hernandez, an arrangement for two tubas of a selection from "Funf Duette für Ruben" by Giacchino Antonio Rossini featuring Alyssa Ortega and Richard Rios, selections from "Mother Goose Suite," a piano duet by Maurice Ravel performed by Dominique Hausler and Andrew Henderson, and finally a piece specially composed for both the occasion and for all of the participants by graduating music composition major Adam Erickson. The event should last just over an hour with no intermission, and pianist John Chernoff will accompany many of the the soloists.
