Friday Night Noir: Double Indemnity (1944)

Pretty much the gold standard of noir. Directed by Billy Wilder, adapted by Raymond Chandler from James M. Cain's hard-boiled novel, and starring noir goddess Barbara Stanwyck as the most fatale of femmes and Fred MacMurray as the amoral sap that falls for her...in more ways than one.

Insurance salesman Walter Neff begins an affair with Phyllis Dietrichson, and the two plot to murder her husband and benefit from an accident insurance policy. The police accept the determination of the husband's accidental death. But Walter's best friend and boss (Edward G. Robinson) doesn't, and suspects that Phyllis murdered her husband with the help of another man.
