Field Trip to Tolowa Coast (RSVP Required)

Join Tolowa Dunes Stewards naturalist Sandra Jerabek for a walk through the Lake Earl Wildlife Area and out to the edge of the Lake Earl estuarine coastal lagoon, the largest lagoon on the West coast. The two mile round trip stroll through forested dunes and Sitka spruce swamps will take us out to view water birds and discuss the unique ecosystems within one of California’s most important wetland and dune complexes. At stops along the tour, Jerabek will also discuss the area’s history, its importance and cultural significance to the Tolowa Dee-ni' Indians, share stories on how the land was settled in the mid-1800s with ranches and dairies—and later how it achieved protection by the State for its outstanding natural and cultural resources. Meet at 2 p.m. at the Lake Earl Wildlife Area Information Center located at 2591 Old Mill Road, Crescent City, California. Bring drinking water, snacks. Comfortable walking shoes, long pants and sleeves, and layers are recommended, binoculars if you have them.
