Program Director
Music Director Funk Prophet 10:00AM-2:00PM Weekdays Weekdays 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Mike started working at KHUM before he was old enough to get into clubs. Perk #1 about working in radio: you can get into clubs!
KHUM keeps Mike off the streets, where he could do actual harm. His previous employers include two video stores, Humboldt State University, and a lumber yard. At the moment, his HSU Journalism degree is blocking the broken vent in the garage so the cats don't get out.
In other words, he's unqualified to do anything of real consequence, and everyone in the office knows it.
Come by his house and he'll feed you some tofu or other fake-o vegetarian products. Look at the CD's, which are organized only by spine color ("That way I don't need the alphabet to file stuff."). Check out the geeky history books, inhale the furry odors of his three cats and the dog, but then leave before he asks if you want to watch The Big Lebowski again.
As if he weren't enough of a NorCal white boy cliche already, his hobbies tell the story: disc golf, running, backpacking, surfing, listening to and playing music. He is a perpetual amateur in all of these.
Luckily, the people he works with keep him out of trouble . Aside from the music, his show is a mistake-riddled collage of local requests, voicemail scraps, progressive music, random interviews, subliminal messages, and other errata. "Freeform radio is more fun when you're driving your own show off the cliff. At least it's different, and nobody dies."
His first musical love is funk. Improvisational music and acoustic music cover the rest of it.
You can reach him at mike@khum.com or by calling 707-786-5104.
