(LISTEN) KHUM In Depth: Healthcare in Humboldt
Bayley Brown / Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017 @ 3:54 p.m. /
This month we dive into the ongoing debate about our healthcare system. We’ll listen to a portion of the speech Senator John McCain delivered last month to his colleagues on the Senate floor as he voted to open up further dialogue on efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (AKA ObamaCare).
Sierra Jenkins sits down with California’s 2nd District Congressman, Jared Huffman, who weighs in on the issues and elaborates on the feedback he’s received from the public and healthcare providers. Huffman also discusses the Medicare Buy-In and Stabilization Act which he and three other congressmen introduced in July. Huffman explains how he sees the expansion of the Medicare program as a good start to expanding a single payer healthcare program that already exists on the Federal level. He also weighs in on California’s SB-562, a bill introduced in the State Senate earlier this year to establish a single payer healthcare system statewide.
Northwest Regional Manager of Partnership HealthPlan of California, Jennifer Chancellor, talks about her organization’s role in administering MediCal benefits to citizens in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties and explains why Medicaid (MediCal in the state of California) is important.
Open Door Community Health Centers is a non-profit organization that provides primary healthcare to a large portion of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. Herrmann Spetzler, CEO of Open Door, shares his perspective on how rural healthcare is changing from previous generations and breaks down what challenges we face in our community amidst these changes. Spetzler also elaborates on what some possible solutions to these new challenges may be.
